Insulation Methods

Since the 1940’s, fiberglass batt has been and continues to be the most economical system for insulating your home. When installed properly, fiberglass batts still perform just as well as newer products.

Water is mixed with a cellulose/glue mixture and sprayed into the wall cavities. The need for more labor and time involved make this a more expensive insulating technique.

Why we don’t insulate this way:

  • The labor and expensive equipment account for more overhead and higher prices.
  • The R-values are the same as fiberglass batt.
  • Cellulose is known to sag, creating voids.
  • The amount of water needed is excessive. Up to four gallons of water per 40 sq ft. See PaperChasePart1pdf
  • The lack of a vapor barrier.
  • Does not allow plumbing to benefit from interior heat.

Variou2 Blow-in-Batt Fiberglass

A less common technique for insulating a home is the use of high density fiberglass blown into the wall cavities. A net is stapled to the wall. Fiberglass is blown through holes in the net filling the entire cavity.

Why we don’t insulate this way:

  • The time and labor accounts for more overhead and higher prices.
  • The R-values are the same as fiberglass batt.
  • The lack of a vapor barrier.
  • Does not allow plumbing to benefit from interior heat.

Variou3 Spray Foam

This system is becoming more common. Foam is sprayed
into the cavities and expands up to 100%.

Why we don’t insulate this way:

  • The time, labor and expensive equipment accounts for more overhead and higher prices.
  • The R-values for the most common spray foam (Icynene®) are the same as fiberglass batt. Polyurethane foam has greater R-values, but the cost difference generally will not pay for itself.
  • Foam seals a house too tight. If you choose this system, then you should add an Energy and Heat Ventilator to your HVAC to draw in fresh air.
  • Gaps and voids are inevitable since the foam expands and contracts.
